The Pittsburgh Steelers announced a pair of contracts on Thursday, March 31, one of which was reported. The “fresh” news is that the Steelers have beefed up the safety of Karl Joseph, who first joined the team in early September 2021, when he signed on to the practice team five months after his first visit to Pittsburgh.

Joseph, 28, is a former Raiders (2016) first-round player who picked him 14th overall in West Virginia. He appeared in two games for the Steelers last season, during which time he scored two tackles and had a blocked pass, according to Pro Football Reference.

In each of his previous five NFL seasons, Joseph started at least eight games, including the eight starts (14 appearances) he made for the Cleveland Browns in 2020, when he scored 67. tackles (46 solos), including two tackles lost, four defensive passes, one interception and two lurking recoveries.

That was followed by four seasons at Oakland, where he played both free and safe strong and authored his best season in 2017, when he started 15 games and made 79 tackles. the pinnacle of his career.

All told, Joseph has appeared in 65 games (49 starts), and has been credited with a total of 305 tackles, five interceptions, 20 defensive passes and three sacks.

How Karl Joseph Fits In 2022

Joseph thinks it serves as depth – or possibly a strong safety net – as the Steelers currently have a huge hole in the roster in that position, now the new Terrell Edmunds began four years of testing free waters. Last May, the Steelers declined to pick Edmunds’ fifth-year option, effectively making last year a “contract year” for him.

For better or for worse, Edmunds has had a 2021 season comparable to previous campaigns, which makes him considered an average starting safe. But if nothing else, Edmunds has been enduring. In fact, he’s only missed one game of his NFL career and has started 60 of the 64 games he’s appeared in, according to Pro Football Reference. On many occasions, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin has said that “Edmunds’ best ability is readiness.”
