Today is the big day. Sunday February 12, 2023 marks the biggest football game of the year, Super Bowl LVII. The Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles will face off at 6:30 p.m. ET at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, with both teams hoping for the championship.

As one of the most-watched television broadcasts of the year, the Super Bowl has also become known as one of the biggest commercial days, with brands vying to air the most creative and memorable commercials during the big game.

This year, Pepsi Zero Sugar did two commercials they call “Great Acting or Great Taste?” starring two of the biggest comedy actors in the business, Steve Martin and Ben Stiller. Watch the commercials below where Martin and Stiller ask viewers if they think Pepsi Zero Sugar tastes really good, or if the actors are just doing their job to make it believable.

Martin’s Pepsi Zero Sugar Commercial features the actor on set performing a nose job on a dog, giving the DMV a seizure and celebrating a family game night win. “My job as an actor is to make people believe that what they see is real,” says Martin. After going through all the scenarios presented, he takes a sip of Pepsi Zero Sugar and says, “Wow, that’s awesome!” before looking at the camera and saying, “Or was I just playing? The only way to find out is to try it yourself.”

A clip of the TV spot was previewed The Today Show on February 8, where hostess Sheinelle Jones confirmed it was Martin’s “official commercial debut”. Martin and Stiller teased each other about selling out by participating in a commercial in a teaser released on the Official Pepsi YouTube Channel before the big game.

Good morning America reports that this is Stiller’s first Super Bowl commercial and sat down with Stiller to discuss the commercial.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been acting. It’s a very different kind of energy than directing. When you act, hopefully you’re more in the moment,” says Stiller. In recent years, Stiller has shifted some of his focus behind the camera, directing and producing an increasing number of projects, particularly for television. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for directing the true-crime limited series Escape at Dannemora in 2018, and again for directing the drama series Severance in 2022 (for which he won six of the nine first season staged episodes).

Rachel Dratch has a guest appearance in Stiller’s Super Bowl commercial, which is similar to Martin’s but with different on-set scenarios. Stiller kills an alien creature proposed to his girlfriend (Dratch, who falls back in her chair, kicking Stiller in the face in the process) and prepares for a photo shoot as his famous character, Derek Zoolander.

“Derek is always fun to play because he’s just a very simple guy who has very clear priorities in life. Looks good, and that’s about it,” Stiller said of returning to the role.
