The nation’s top gymnasts converge this weekend in San Jose for the 2023 US Artistic Gymnastics Championships. The annual event sees athletes compete not only for a national title, but also for a spot on the US team for October’s World Artistic Gymnastics Championships .
This year’s field is led by the return of Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, who is returning to competition after mental health issues and a break following the 2020 Olympics. The woman who went on to win the 2020 Olympic all-around title, Suni Lee, is also at this year’s “National Championships” after briefly pausing her elite gymnastics career to compete for Auburn on the college circuit.

As previously mentioned, Simone Biles and Suni Lee – the last two Olympic all-around gold medalists – lead the women’s field in San Jose. Other women’s competitors include Olympic medalists Jade Carey and Jordan Chiles, as well as 2022 World All-Around Silver medalist Shilese Jones and Leanne Wong, who recently finished second to Biles at the 2023 US Classic.
Recently married Biles aims to become the first man or woman to win eight national all-around titles. At 26, she would also become the oldest US all-around champion in women’s history.
Among the men, veterans Yul Moldauer, Donnell Whittenburg, Shane Wiskus and Asher Hong, who won the all-around title at the US Classic, stand out.
The US National Gymnastics Team medalists and elite athletes will be invited to a selection camp in September where the Women’s World Team will be announced.
The men’s world team will be selected by a committee after the national teams and will be named on Sunday.
