Strictly Come Dancing Blackpool: Hamza Yassin and Jowita Przystal open the show

Strictly Come Dancing returned to screens for its ninth live show on Saturday night, as the show returned to Blackpool Tower for the first time in three years for the programme’s iconic annual trip to the seaside city.

The show opened with a performance by the show’s professional dancers, surrounded by neon signs that read ‘Blackpool is Back’, before judges Shirley Ballas, Craig Revel Horwood, Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke took the stage to join the Dance.

Hamza Yassin was the first to perform in the legendary ballroom with his partner Jowita Przystal when the pair performed on an American Smooth to Frank Sinatra’s legendary 1979 hit New York, New York.

And it was an impressive start for the pair, with Shirley calling the wildlife photographer “the only one to beat” as he stepped out in a tailcoat and bow tie ensemble.

“Hamza, you have shone brighter than all the balls and beads and bracelets in the world. You have so much respect for Blackpool, your footwork, you’re devoted to small details. Even though it’s Blackpool, you’re as cool as a cucumber. You’re the one I have to beat,” the referee said.

While Anton was ready to jump on stage with them, he said: “People ask if I miss dancing, that’s the dance I would have loved to have done. Welcome to Blackpool, everyone, superb.”

And while Craig usually had some critics, he called it “spectacular,” sharing, “I didn’t like your solo jazz section, but the timing, footwork and moves were absolutely spectacular.”

“It doesn’t matter what they throw at you, you perform with excellence. It shows that you are in complete control of yourself, your partner and this ballroom,” Motsi reiterated.

And after calling the performance “an absolute honour,” Hamza managed to bag a score of 38 as both Craig and Motsi gave nine points while Shirley and Anton gave ten.

Molly Rainford and her partner Carlos Gu were off the dance floor with a Jive to American Bandstand (Bandstand Boogie) as Claudia said they pulled it off.

Anton quickly agreed: “Absolutely great. It’s clean, it’s perfectly timed. Keep it up, great dance – well done.”

“It needs to be a bit brighter, obviously you’re dancing next to a pro. But what I love about you is that you absolutely sell the dance,” Craig said.

Motsi and Shirley also had positive comments for the couple, with the latter sharing, “I hope we all appreciate how good that jive was.”

As usual, hosts Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman put on a glamorous show, with Claudia donning a feathered bust jumpsuit while co-host Tess opted for a lime green fitted dress.

It comes after Fleur East and partner Vito Coppola topped the leaderboard with 39 points from a possible 40 last week.

And without a dance-off, Tony Adams sensationally exited the competition last week with an apparent hamstring injury and lost his place.
