Anton Du Beke, 56, said: “You couldn’t have danced that dance so well earlier in the season. This is an extraordinary achievement for you because I know what you are dealing with with your strength and intensity.

“For me, this is your best dance of the series.”

Craig Revel Horwood, 57, told them: You lost a little bit of footwork and balance… It was a little bit unsteady, I would have liked to see a softer Spanish line, but you gave strength, you gave strength.

Craig said: “I felt like the whole thing was a bit rigid. I felt like you could have floated through the moments a little more but you are a beautiful dancer and it was beautiful to watch.’

Motsi, 41, told them: “For me, I thought of magic. It creates those special moments that define Strictly Come Dancing…putting on a slow waltz and making it your own, Gorka and Helen, thanks for that.”

Motsi said: “You were so alive, present and really in control. You have increased the heights of the elevators in Strictly. Everything was on point. Guys, extraordinary.’

Anton said to them: “You brought everything with you. That was excellent. Well done.’

‘You have a stillness and a stillness that is just indescribably beautiful.’

Craig told them, “It was a bit out of character for me. It was full of stops. You stopped dancing and the story stopped and that chilled it emotionally. I was hoping to see a little bit more than that.’

Craig gave the pair an eight, while Motsi gave a nine, Shirley nine, while Anton gave a 10. The pair scored a total of 36 out of 40 points.

Commenting on Shirley, she said: “There were a few things missing from that dance. You had the arrogant part, you came out and delivered a good strong message I’ll give you that.

“But Pasodoble was built on an oval shape. It collapsed as you picked her up…if you decide to wear a cape, you can’t just slap it around. It’s an extension of your arms.

“I think you gave 100 percent of your heart for it.”

Anton said, “For me, it’s always about the storytelling with you…nothing gets me more excited than when the dance gets a little generic. I never understand you.

‘I think you tried too hard. You just gave him a little too much.’

Craig told them, “I have to agree with Shirley, the cape work needed air…I love the way you take charge and I know how hard you work, but I don’t think that dance tonight was your cup of tea.”

Motsi said: “You were one of the most committed to the dance tonight so let’s see what happens.”

Will said after the dance, “I feel bad,” referring to Nancy. He said: “I let her down to be honest.”

Commenting on his comments, Anton said: “You’ve got the night you want in a semi-final. You’re doing great tonight.’

Craig told them, “I want to see this, bizarrely, less controlled. It was absolutely amazing.’

Motsi said: “If you look at one of those videos from the old days where you saw a Charleston and what it was like… you gave us everything like Anton said. You’ve lifted yourself to a level in the right part of the competition.’

Shirley said: “It was a very, very free performance which I love. This style of dancing suits you because you can do your own thing. I felt you took care of it… I applaud you for that.”
