‘Strictly’s’ Shirley Ballas weighs in against Bruno Tonioli

Ballroom dancer and Strictly Come Dancing judge Shirley Ballas has addressed the issue between Bruno Tonioli and Anton Du Beke and offered a solution while praising her peers.

Here’s what Ballas said should be done.

For Strictly Come Dancing Season 20, Ballas thinks they could have 5 judges

Longtime Dancing With the Stars judge Tonioli was also a longtime judge on Britain’s Strictly Come Dancing. He was a member of the judges from the first to the 17th season. During season 18 he was a virtual guest judge as pandemic travel restrictions prevented him from being in England to be a full-time judge in person.

But for season 19, Tonioli wasn’t reclaimed and was instead replaced by Anton Du Beke, a former professional dancer on Strictly Come Dancing. The question of late has been whether Tonioli would return to the show, especially given that he was part of the 2022 Strictly Come Dancing live tour, which ran from Jan. 20 to Feb. 13. Unlike its US counterpart, the ‘Strictly’ live tour includes judges and Tonioli was asked to attend alongside fellow judges Shirley Ballas and Craig Revel Horwood.

On the red carpet for the Royal Television Society Awards on March 30, Ballas was asked about the situation on ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ with Tonioli vs Du Beke as fourth judge and she offered a solution.

“I hope Anton stays, but we could have five seats,” Ballas said The mirror.

The fifth judge she speaks of, alongside Ballas, Horwood, Du Beke and Tonioli, is Motsi Mabuse, a South African professional dancer who competed as a professional on the German version of the show before becoming a judge there and later becoming Strictly Come Dance. “

Ballas’ remarks follow Horwood, who appears to be changing his mind about Tonioli’s return. A February 2022 report by The sun said Horwood was “a very, very vocal supporter of the reinstatement of Bruno” and that replacing him permanently with Du Beke would “ruffle” Horwood’s feathers.

But then, in March 2022, Horwood recounted The sun that he hopes Du Beke will sit on the jury for season 20.

“I was glad they got him off the dance floor and then put him where he belongs. I hope he comes back next year. I absolutely loved it,” Horwood said.

Ballas has nothing but praise for Tonioli

In the same conversation with The Mirror, Ballas, the mother of former “Dancing With the Stars” pro dancer Mark Ballas and ex-wife of former DWTS pro Corky Ballas, had nothing but nice things to say about Tonioli, calling him “A Power to be reckoned with.”

“I just did the Tour with Bruno and he was spot on and on form,” said Ballas. “There is nobody like Bruno. He’s a force to be reckoned with.”

She also said she hopes Strictly Come Dancing executives will raise the plexiglass screens between the judges, which they used as part of the pandemic protocol.

“It would be nice [to lose the screens]but we have a long three and a half months ahead of us,” Ballas said.

Strictly Come Dancing returns for its 20th season this fall. the BBC announced the professional lineup on March 31: Dianne Buswell, Nadiya Bychkova, Graziano Di Prima, Amy Dowden, Karen Hauer, Katya Jones, Neil Jones, Nikita Kuzmin, Cameron Lombard, Gorka Marquez, Luba Mushtuk, Giovanni Pernice, Jowita Przystal, Johannes Radebe, Kai Widdington and Nancy Xu.

“We couldn’t be prouder of Strictly’s professional dancers and are thrilled to have so many returning for 2022,” executive producer Sarah James said in a statement. “The world-class skills and exceptional care they bring to everything they do, from working with their celebrity partners to choreographing and performing remarkable and unforgettable routines, never cease to amaze us. They truly are the best in the business and we can’t wait to see what they bring to the Strictly Ballroom for our twentieth fabulous series.”

Dancing With the Stars has not yet been renewed for season 31. If extended, it will return in September 2022.
