Student with big heart adopts child he found in Trashcan while on vacation in Haiti

A Texas man who found a child in a trash can during a visit to Haiti in 2017, is now looking to legally adopt the child.

Jimmy Amisial was visiting his hometown in Haiti during a break from his studies at Texas State University in San Marcos when he saw a crowd gathered by a trash can, according to Britain’s Daily Mail.

A 4-month-old boy is inside.

“When I woke up that day, I had absolutely no idea that my life was about to change forever,” says Amisial, now 27.

“People are crowding around this crate and I hear them arguing about what to do with this little baby. Everyone just stared at him – not a single soul wanted to help. He was crying and naked and I could see the pain in his eyes – I had to do something,” he said.

Amisial took the baby to his mother’s home, Elicie Jean, in Gonaives, Haiti. They washed, dressed the child and fed him some milk before taking him to the doctor for treatment for ant bites.

The location of the child’s parents could not be determined, prompting a judge to ask Amisial if he wanted to be the child’s legal guardian.

“When asked to raise it, I stayed up for days tossing and turning, trying to make a decision. I fell behind on college tuition and my family was always struggling to make ends meet,” he said.

“But I grew up without a father, and this poor child had to face a life full of uncertainty and uncertainty. Something inside was telling me this happened for a reason – so I took a leap of faith. Sometimes you don’t have to know what to do, you just have to be willing to do it,” says Amisial.

He agreed to raise the child with the help of his mother, and so Emilio Angel Jeremiah had a home.

Since then, Amisial said he has split his time between studying and working at Gonaives, which has left him behind in his degree pursuit. But he has no regrets.

“I found him, he was 4 months old – now he is almost 5 years old. It’s been an incredible journey and watching him grow up has been so rewarding – I’m so proud of him,” he said.

“I have to do what I have to do when no one else wants to, and I’ve been grateful for the past four and a half years. I really feel like a father, and I’m happy to put pen to paper and make Emilio my son,” he said, noting that he was in the process of raising the amount needed to receive raise the boy.

Amisial said the child has now started school.

“I am so glad I had the opportunity to turn his life from being abandoned in the trash to a wonderful treasure. It’s been fun to see him grow – he’s a joy to be around,” he said.

“Mother loved him, the children in the orphanage loved him, and I loved him as if he were my own. He really is a special boy.”
