PITTSBURGH (AP) – Investigators studying the collapse of a bridge in Pittsburgh nearly a year ago are closely examining damage to the structure’s legs, the National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday.
On agency update on the January 28, 2022, Fern Hollow Bridge failure said its engineers are examining “multiple fractures” found on the bridge’s legs. All four legs were scanned to allow for further analysis.
The span dropped a bus and four cars about 100 feet into a ravine, injuring several people, hours before President Joe Biden visited the city to promote a massive infrastructure bill. The span took Forbes Avenue through Frick Park, Fern Hollow Creek and Tranquil Trail.
A new bridge open to traffic last month after design and construction accelerated.
The update states that in addition to 3D scanning parts of the collapsed bridge and compiling documentation, they have also conducted mechanical and metallurgical tests that will be completed soon.
The results are compared to the original bridge design specifications.
A preliminary report The report, issued a year ago, concluded that the collapse started at the western end of the structure and said there had been no primary fractures in sections of welded steel beams classified as “fracture-critical”.
