‘Survivor 42:’ Swati reveals behind-the-scenes reality of ‘Number One’

Swati Goel and Romeo Escobar

Swati Goel and Romeo Escobar in Episode 4 of Survivor 41.

In Episode 4 of “Survivor 42,” 19-year-old Swati Goel was sent home from Ika after her duplicity caught up with her. After her fellow tribesmen Romeo Escobar, Drea Wheeler, and Tori Meehan all realized she was telling each of them that they were her “number one,” they all decided she was untrustworthy, leading to a joint vote against her.

However, as fans of the show know, editing can often give the wrong impression of what really happened. Though Swati laughed at the humorous cut, she also revealed that there was more to the flashback scenes than audiences realized. Also, it turns out that she real Number one was maybe the only person we didn’t even see say it to. Here’s what you need to know:

Swati explains what happened in “Number 1” scenes with Romeo & Drea

youtubeSwati Goel tells Romeo Escobar in a flashback scene in Episode 4 of Survivor 42 that he is her “number one”.

In her Exit interview with Rob Cesternino, Swati revealed that there was more behind these special flashback scenes than was shown. She explained that the reason she said that to Romeo and Drea in particular, for example, is because they told her first. “In my defense,” she said, “Drea told me she’s my number one…literally, I think, seconds before this clip.”

She said the same goes for Romeo. “So,” she explained, “it just seemed like the right thing to say.” She added that she didn’t think either of them meant it either, so her response was little more than a reflection of hers.

in a (n Interview with ParadeSwati also revealed that her “real Number one” was “definitely” either Tori or Rocksroy Bailey, whose bond with Swati wasn’t much on display during the show. “I really wanted to work with Tori, [and] I really wanted to work with Rocks,” she said. “Rocks and I were actually very, very close.” It’s also worth noting that Rocksroy was the only one in the tribe who didn’t vote for her last episode (he voted for Tori, who he didn’t get along with).

Drea & Romeo gave her “Good Vibes” in front of the Tribal Council.

Swati also shed light on what the hours before the tribal council were like from her perspective, revealing that Drea and Romeo in particular had led her to believe she was safe. “I got really good vibes … from Drea and Romeo before Tribal,” she said, per Parade. However, she said her fears were heightened about half an hour before Tribal when Drea went to Romeo and told him, “We need to talk.” Swati continued:

I think [Drea] might have even said, “We need to change the plan” or something like that. And I said, ‘Damn, it’s coming my way.’

I don’t know exactly what caused Drea to change her strategy just before Tribal. But then I thought, ‘OK, I think the only solution here is to fight, because they’re clearly planning to vote for me.’

Despite the broken relationships Swati may have had with the other three on the island, she harbors no ill will toward them. “I think the people in my tribe are all great people,” she said. “I didn’t necessarily love them all when I was on the island. But when I watch it again, I really have no feelings of bitterness. I wish them all the best for the rest of this season.”

“Survivor 42” airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern on CBS.
