The survivor community has seen its fair share of engagements, weddings, and baby announcements over the past few months. It was announced Tuesday that Edge of Extinction season 38 winner Chris Underwood will be a father. Here’s what you need to know:

Chris announces his wife Katelyn is three months pregnant

Chris, 29, who became controversial winner the 38th season of “Survivor” in 2019, made one post on Instagram Tuesday revealed he and wife Katelyn are expecting their first child. While he didn’t reveal the baby’s gender, he wrote that it was due in October, meaning Katelyn is around three months pregnant.

“Baby Underwood performing in October 2022!!” Chris wrote in his caption. “Thank you for all of your thoughts, prayers and kind words on our journey to parenthood! We’re ready for this little beach babe 🏄🏻‍♀️🏄🏻‍♂️ to join the tribe.”

Many of the show’s fans and alumni sent their congratulations in light of the post. “Omg I’m screaming!” wrote Brice Izyah Johnstona well-known Season 28 contestant, “Cagayan,” who now hosts a podcast titled “Survivor.” Purple Pants Podcast. “I’m going to be a mom 😍,” he added.

Ron Clark, a competitor in Chris’ season who voted for him to win, joked that the baby would be born on October 24th, Ron’s birthday. “Bet,” he wrote. Ghost Island season 36 winner Wendell Holland simply wrote, “CONGRATS!!!!!”

Chris met Katelyn at a party in 2015

After you wedding website, Chris and Katelyn Jermstad met at a college party in 2015, shortly after Katelyn graduated from the University of Southern California. They began dating and, according to the website, “their love blossomed over the next two years.” In July 2018, shortly after filming in Fiji on Survivor: Edge of Extinction wrapped, Chris proposed to Katelyn and she accepted. They wed on April 26, 2019 — just weeks before then-26-year-old Chris became $1 million richer.

Chris’ victory was natural quite controversial within the Survivor community; Though he won in a landslide 9-4-0 jury vote, almost all of those votes were people he didn’t vote out thanks to the infamous “Edge of Extinction” twist. Chris was voted out of the game third on Day 8 and only reentered the game 27 days later with only five candidates remaining. Given that Chris only spent about 12 days out of 39 in the game and only attended six tribal councils (from which he was voted out), there was one pretty big game within the fan community following his surprise win.

The season was overall panned wide, although the Edge of Extinction twist was brought back two seasons later for Winners at War. However, the winner in this case didn’t spend any time on the Edge (although the runner-up did). According to EWChris received an invitation to return to Winners at War, but declined as he had only gotten married a few hours before receiving the call.

After winning the title of Sole Survivor, Chris spoke to Greenville News — an affiliate of his native South Carolina — where he said he plans to save some of his prize money and use the rest to travel. After that, he and Katelyn planned to have children. It looks like this plan has finally paid off.

Survivor 42 airs Wednesdays at 8 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on CBS. The three-hour finale will air Wednesday, May 25, 2022.
