Update on the disappearance of Susan Powell can give answers in mysterious cases. The Utah woman has been missing since December 7, 2009 when she disappeared from her home.
The latest news in the case stemmed from a mine search in the western Utah desert, follow Fox 13 Now. Evidence was collected and sent to a Salt Lake City laboratory.
20/20 is reviewing the incident with a special update tonight, February 18, 2022 on ABC at 9 p.m. ET. The show first aired on November 13, 2020.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. Powell’s husband, Josh Powell, killed his 2 sons and himself in an explosion
During a scheduled, supervised visit between Josh Powell and his sons, Charlie and Braden, Susan Powell’s husband killed his children and himself. The boys were aged 2 and 4. When a social worker arrived with the boys, he pulled them inside and slammed the door in the girl’s face, according to one Stunning filed in a Washington state circuit court.
The social worker banged on the door until he smelled gasoline. Then the house exploded. Josh Powell and the boys died of carbon monoxide poisoning. The second leading cause of death for children is “cutting wounds”. Police believe he attacked his sons with a hatch cover before the fire, according to The News Tribune.
In the 24-hour period before Powell and his sons killed themselves, he donated their toys and books and said goodbye via phone calls and letters. He also filled two 5-gallon cans with gasoline, according to The News Tribune.
One of his last phone calls was to his sister. He left a voicemail, saying, “This is Josh. I’m calling to say goodbye. I can’t live without my sons, and I can’t go on anymore. I apologize to everyone I have hurt. Goodbye.”
2. The couple’s oldest son told the police that their mother went camping with them and didn’t come home
When Josh Powell was questioned by police about his wife’s disappearance, he told them he had taken his young sons camping the night before. Police immediately cast doubt on the story because of the low temperatures on the night he said he had gone camping with the boys.
Their eldest son later told police that their mother was also camping with them, according to The News Tribune..
He said “his mother went camping with them even though she didn’t come back home with them and he didn’t know why.”
3. Susan Powell wrote a letter to her family and friends in June 2008 saying that her husband had threatened her and that she was scared for her life.

A friend visited Susan Powell for lunch on December 6, 2009, the day before she went missing. According to The Charley Project, nothing seems out of the ordinary.
“According to her friends, Susan was behaving normally at the time and just said she was tired and wanted to take a nap before dinner,” The Charley Project reported.
4. Josh Powell’s father Steve Powell has been convicted of child pornography and has tape containing a picture of Susan Powell
In 2011, Police were conducting a search for information about the disappearance of Susan Powell when they found child pornographic images in her home. Steve Powell, Josh Powell’s father. The children pictured are his former neighbors and the pictures were taken through the windows. Steve Powell was convicted and sentenced to three years in prison, according to a Stunning submit your case.
“On August 25, officers from Pierce County and Utah executed a warrant to search Powell’s home. They seized computers, hard drives, discs, camcorders, videos and notebooks during the search. A saucer seized from Powell’s bedroom contains photos and videos carefully organized into folders. One of such folders is titled ‘Neighbors’, which contains subfolders titled ‘Open a window at home later’, ‘Take a shower-1,’ and ‘Take a shower-2’, appealed said.
Powell was sentenced to 30 months in prison. He was later convicted on an additional charge, and sentenced to 60 months in prison to run concurrently with his previous sentence.
Police found an entry in Powell’s magazine that read, “I love making videos of pretty girls in shorts and skirts, pretty women of all ages. Sometimes I use those images to stimulate myself.”
Also during the investigation into the disappearance of Susan Powell, the police found a diary belonging to Susan. She wrote that she believed her father-in-law was a pedophile.
When police collected thousands of child pornographic images depicting 8-year-old girls in Steven Powell’s home, they also found images of Susan, according to the report. The Charley Project.
“Interestingly, Steven had previously claimed Susan was ‘a very sexual person’ and that she wanted to have an affair with him, but Susan’s family said the opposite was true and Susan and Josh had moved to Utah. partly to stay away from her. unwanted sexual advances by father-in-law,” the Charley Project reported. “One of Susan’s friends said she told him Steven stalked her while she was getting dressed and, after moving to Utah, she told Josh she never wanted to let her know. allow Steven into their home. Josh admits he is aware of his father’s interest in Susan. In her diary, Susan writes that she thinks Steven is a pedophile and is a bad influence on Josh.

5. Josh Powell is a suspect in the case but his death leaves Susan Powell’s family and friends unanswered
Susan’s best friend, Kiirsi Hellewell, tell Fox 13 Now in February 2022 that she is still waiting to find out what happened to her friend.

“It was a pretty emotional week last week,” Susan’s best friend, Kiirsi Hellewell, told the news agency. “Going back and forth a lot. Is she? Is it not her? Have they found a clue about Susan’s disappearance? ”
She told the news outlet that she has been waiting for the closure for years but she is trying not to be too optimistic that the answers are approximate.
“I saw the pants myself, I touched them. I looked at them closely and I thought they were a pair of women’s trousers. Why would someone throw a pair of women’s trousers down for me? ‘ Hellewell told the news outlet. found her.’ And then the rations will come back and we’ll say, ‘Probably not. Don’t get your hopes up.’ We’ve been here so many times before.”
