Sydney Pride mural vandalized outside Wynyard Station featuring ‘creepy’ teddy bear gay bondage painting

A “kink and BDSM-inspired” mural was vandalized in the middle of the night after many called for it to be removed.
The controversial painting on Wynyard Street in Sydney’s CBD showed a hairy, overweight man wearing a leather ankle strap with a teddy bear’s head across his chest while reclining on a sofa with a beer can and a gay pride flag.
It was intended to promote local businesses during WorldPride festival but sparked outrage and calls for the “creepy and sexualized” image to be removed from children’s view.
The mural was installed near one of the city’s busiest train and bus stations, also known as Wynyard.
A video on social media showed the aftermath of the destruction as a police officer looked at the black and white paint splattered mural.

A caption accompanying the TikTok video read: “Wow! The people have spoken. power to the people’.
YCK Laneways – a local retailer that sponsored it – said the mural was created for WorldPride, a global event celebrating queer culture currently taking place in Sydney.
But many city workers and visitors called the mural “inappropriate,” especially given that the teddy bear image would attract the attention of children.
While most kids have little to no understanding of BDSM or bondage, some felt the mural would spark awkward conversations.
Catlin Roper, a spokeswoman for Collective Shout, an organization campaigning against the intrusion of pornography into the mainstream, asked why the mural was painted.
“Whose idea was it to combine a teddy bear with BDSM for a public audience? This is creepy,” she wrote in an online comment.

A second person wrote: “Why would a tied up teddy bear represent pride?!
“The gay community has worked hard for years to distance itself from this type of representation. Small children will walk past it.”
Another disgruntled commenter said: “How did YCK Laneways conclude that a furry/BDSM clad man would be appropriate for children to walk by in their own community? This mural must be removed as soon as possible.’
A fourth person wrote: “Why do you think this is appropriate to show publicly?!
“A fat, hairy, alcohol-drinking, bondage-wearing teddy bear man on display where people walk by to go to work, in full view of the children.”
Others compared the disturbing correlation between childhood images and sexual fantasies to the Balenciaga scandal.
The upscale fashion house had to apologize for a promotional image that featured teddy bears dressed in bondage.
A Sydney insider shared his thoughts on the explicit painting on TikTok.
“At what point does inclusion go too far,” said user Moeyreacts.
‘They’ve got a fat man here at Wynyard who’s naked and wearing a cute teddy bear hat.
“It’s disgusting, it’s Balenciaga vibes.”
More than 1,000 viewers commented on the video, with most calling for the mural to be scrapped.
“I saw this on my way to work and thought about getting a bucket of black paint and covering it,” one wrote.
However, some people were in favor of the mural, telling negative commenters to “look the other way” if they have a problem with it.
A YCK spokesperson responded to the outrage, saying: “YCK Laneways is an inclusive district that welcomes and celebrates a diverse community and subculture from across Sydney.
“The mural is in place to celebrate WorldPride and will be removed on March 5.”
WorldPride said it was not connected to the painting.
