Yesterday the Premier League announced its nominees for the 2021/22 Premier League Young Player of the Season award, which included Tyrick Mitchell.
The Crystal Palace defender – who is a target for Tottenham and Newcastle – has enjoyed a superb season in 2021/22 under Patrick Vieira.

who will be yours @Hublot Junior Player of the Season? 🤔

What’s the matter?
Well, the 22-year-old has already been named Young Player of the Season by Crystal Palace and he could now add to that accolade.
Alongside Mitchell, the Premier League nominees include Conor Gallagher, Phil Foden, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Declan Rice, Bukayo Saka, Aaron Ramsdale and Mason Mount.
Those are some standout names, so Crystal Palace No.3 – who Jack Grealish described as “brilliant” – will certainly struggle to win the award, good as it is.
His nomination comes after some outlets revealed that both Antonio Conte and Eddie Howe are monitoring the left-back.
Elsewhere, Manchester City are also said to be interested in Mitchell.
Tottenham & Newcastle aim hard
Hopefully one day the Premier League will change this award as it doesn’t make much sense in its current format.
As it stands, the award recognizes the best Under-23 player from the Premier League campaign.
However, the likes of Rice, Foden, Alexander-Arnold and Mount are established Premier League stars who almost feel like high-profile figures to have featured so often.
We believe the award should only be given to under-21 players or for impressive debut Premier League campaigns by young players.
Mitchell is 22, of course, but since he appeared on the scene almost out of nowhere, the award feels much more appropriate for someone like him.
Alexander-Arnold, for example, also ran for the Premier League Player of the Season award so he’s clearly outgrown his rookie status.
Regardless of who wins this year, the Premier League needs to make changes.
In other news, Redknapp says he’d still rather be Arsenal than Tottenham in the top-four race
