McKee Says Type 1 Diabetic Impacted Her Life on TV: ‘I’d start acting and look like a little brat on TV’

McKee has been open about her diagnosis when she was just 11 years old. In 2018, she released a rap track that highlighted her illness.

“I was 11 years old,” McKee said Healthline from the early years of her illness. “Looking back, I think I was diagnosed earlier in elementary school because I was sick and so, so skinny. I couldn’t pay attention in class, I was always shaky and I just don’t remember my childhood… it was kind of blurry.”

Her illness even affected her time on MTV.

“Sometimes on TV they want to see cute scenes of me and my friends eating s’mores… and I’m like, ‘Okay.’ Then I eat the s’more and I get sick,” she told the outlet. “And when you’re at 400, you don’t want cameras on your face. Then I started playing and I looked like a little brat on TV. So yes, some things were just hard for me to “grow up” in the spotlight for such a short time. And I’ve tried staying off social media and not reading what people are saying about me, but it’s been tough. And then I would, and I would get so upset I would cry to the point of shaking and messing with my blood sugar. It wasn’t a healthy way to live.”

In 2020, she wrote about how diabetes affected a marathon she was running.

“It was my 4th degree and one of my worst times?. . The first half was awesome, then my sugar started to drop and I ate, then I realized I needed to eat more. After mile 9 did I really start to slow to an embarrassing pace?” she wrote on Instagram at the time. “My sugar just didn’t have it. But I’m done.”

Just last month, McKee announced that she had split from her husband now deleted Instagram post.

“With all the messages I get and the articles coming out, I just wanted you guys to hear what’s going on from me,” she wrote Lute! News. “Sometimes things work and sometimes it just doesn’t work, no matter how hard you fight. Breaking my silence that Josh and I are done… It’s time for me to find my happiness.”
