Tesco is facing thousands of customer complaints as a ‘nationwide’ system failure causes delivery disruptions

Tesco is facing “thousands” of angry customer inquiries tonight after a large number of deliveries and collections were canceled due to a “technical issue”.

The supermarket giant revealed it was forced to cancel “a large number of orders today” and instead offered customers an alternative slot due to the system glitch.

But shoppers have complained it could be days before they can access another delivery slot, as many elderly and vulnerable customers remain hungry as the UK endures a week of freezing weather.

Paul Coombs wrote online: “Want Tesco to explain why my 85 year old vulnerable mother’s birth just got cancelled? What backup plan do you have for such customers?’

Jason Linham wrote: “Tesco why did you cancel our click and collect order two minutes before pickup! #fail’

Jayne Stephenson tweeted: “…It’s disgusting! I work and will be struggling to accommodate now, especially with all collection/delivery slots filled for the next few days. I have kids to feed!!’

Andrew Jordan added: “Not impressed. Order canceled today. No call or text. Arrived at home and sat around waiting for the delivery. There are no slots available for another delivery until the weekend. Off to Sainsbury’s, Cheers.”

Benny Brown tweeted: “Tesco no explanation no apologies no compensation – just a no telling delivery cancelled. Terrible service. Just awful.’

In various responses to customers, Tesco detailed the “technical glitch” that was happening “across the country” and urged them to send a message for details on resolving their complaints.

A Tesco spokesman said: “Due to an intermittent technical issue, we have had to cancel some orders today. We deeply regret this and are working hard to notify affected customers.’

In January this year, Tesco – Britain’s largest grocer – stunned shoppers with its price hikes after it was revealed it was charging £1.70 for a 400g tin of the national favourite. A week earlier the cost was £1.40 but for consumers a can is now a fifth or 30p more.

According to industry data, cash-strapped shoppers already grappling with rising energy and mortgage bills were hit by another 21 percent surge this week.

Figures from Assosia, leaked to the Mail, show that the price of a can of the American giant’s Cream Of Tomato Soup at Tesco has risen 79 per cent from just 95p since June.

It comes just six months after Tesco pledged to stand by squeezed consumers and not pass on “unjustified” price hikes, which sparked a bitter dispute with Heinz. Tesco was praised for standing firm against the giant, with Heinz cutting off deliveries to the supermarket during the argument.

In response to the price hikes, a senior industry source said: “Raising prices after shouting to hold Heinz accountable stinks of double standards.

“With money tight for so many these days, customers value consistency and transparency.”

The increases come as the UK faces the biggest drop in living standards on record as the rising cost of living weighs on people’s wages.

The Office for Budget Responsibility’s official forecaster said household incomes will fall by 7 percent by 2024.

The price of a week’s grocery shopping is 14.4 per cent higher than a year ago and households are looking for bargains, with an increasing shift towards own-brand products and discount grocers such as Aldi and Lidl.

Meanwhile, MailOnline revealed last week that supermarkets have quietly increased the prices of ready meals and microwave meals by up to 50 per cent over the last year.

And in January, the Mail revealed how fresh food prices had risen 15 percent – as retailers warned there were no signs the boom would slow anytime soon.

Tesco, which controls more than a quarter of the UK grocery market, has now been accused of backing down on a pledge it made in June “not to pass on unjustified price increases to shoppers”.

The company promised “laser focus” to keep the cost of weekly grocery shopping in check and was lauded for standing firm against Heinz, a £43billion US conglomerate.
