The £17m asking price should tempt West Ham to race alongside Tottenham and Newcastle for the 30-year-old

TuttoMercatoWeb claim Tottenham and Newcastle have been informed a £17m price tag will convince Inter Milan to capitalize on Stefan de Vrij. But at this price, West Ham must throw their hat in the ring.

De Vrij, 30, is close to signing his final 12-month contract with Inter Milan – after four years with the Nerrazzuri. In that time, the 55-time Dutch ace has made 155 appearances for Inter and won the Serie A title last season.

But with his contract situation up in the air, a move to the Premier League looks increasingly likely. TMW say £17million will be enough to convince them to cash in on de Vrij in the coming weeks.

Newcastle and Tottenham are said to be interested in signing the defender for a bargain price but surely West Ham need him more than Spurs and the Toon? Especially after both Spurs and Newcastle made defensive signings.

Should West Ham take on Newcastle and Tottenham in the race for de Vrij?

Tottenham brought in Cristian Romero and Antonio Conte rejuvenated Eric Dier. They also boast Ben Davies, Japhet Tanganga, Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon. They could use cover for Davies, a left-footed defender.

De Vrij is right footed. Newcastle might need more of a defender but signed Dan Burn in January – and still have Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar and are likely to go after Sven Botman and Diego Carlos again.

West Ham need a centre-back more. Angelo Ogbonna, who at times plays in the back three, remains injured and will be 34 in May. Issa Diop is fickle and in European competition they need a quality defender.

De Vrij would be a massive improvement over their current options. It would give the Inter ace a chance, likely to play in the Europa League and live in London. The Hammers must enter the race for de Vrij with £17million.
