The summer transfer window is still a few weeks away. But also already on 1.4Stis starting to feel inevitable that we are witnessing the dying embers of Issa Diop’s career at West Ham United.

If that horrific performance against non-league Kidderminster Harriers in the FA Cup third round – when West Ham needed extra time and a Declan Rice masterclass to progress – was Diop’s rites of passage, then David feels Moyes’ pursuit another centre-back on the last nail in his coffin at the London Stadium.

This is reported by the Berlin Kurier on Friday that Niklas Stark is a summer target for the Hammers and Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers. Stark is a Moyes favorite after holding talks with the Hammers late last year (sports1).

In addition, Hertha BSC managing director Fredi Bobic has now confirmed that the two-time German national player will go on a free transfer after his contract expires in July.

Moyes is also a fan of Lille’s Sven Botman – he’s not the only one – and long-time target Duje Caleta-Car. Both players are expected to leave their Ligue 1 employers before September.

Even Dejan Lovren has been linked, although Zenit St Petersburg have distanced themselves from speculation about the 32-year-old’s future with the Russian Premier League leaders.

Is Issa Diop done at West Ham?

If a new defender arrives, Diop will surely be the man to make way.

The Frenchman has made just nine league appearances this season. Most of that came when Kurt Zouma was injured in early 2022. Furthermore, with his contract due to expire in just over 12 months, this may be West Ham’s last chance to recoup a decent chunk of their £22million outlay.

Accordingly FootMercato, the Hammers would accept £12m this summer given Lyon interest. That’s a lot less than the £60m West Ham wanted for Diop a few seasons ago when Manchester United called.

But £12m is still better than nothing.

Diop just turned 25 in January. There’s still plenty of time on his side. And history is littered with examples of hapless players who stalled their careers in a new environment.

Lyon, one of the sides that have expressed interest, has had a similarly transformative effect on the likes of Lucas Paqueta, Karl Toko Ekambi and Tanguy Ndombele.

A fresh start certainly feels like what Diop needs right now. More than ever.
