Mario Götze told The Mail that he should have joined Liverpool in 2016. The German returned to Dortmund from Bayern Munich six years ago but injury woes prevented him from reviving his early Dortmund form.
Götze, now 29, is synonymous with scoring the winning goal for Germany in extra time in the 2014 World Cup final against Argentina. But he’s a long way from that today – even if he convinces in midfield at PSV.
After a good three years at Bayern, albeit as part of a rotation option, he returned to Dortmund – but a metabolic disease and groin and ankle problems prevented him from returning to his best form.
He left Dortmund for the second time in 2020 to join PSV, his career waning. But he’s rejuvenated some form this season, recording 21 goal contributions in 45 games – scoring 11 and creating 10.
Reflecting on his career, Gotze confirmed he could have joined Liverpool after returning to Dortmund – after speaking to Jurgen Klopp. He says it’s not a regret but admits he should have moved to Anfield.
“We’re still in contact and we talked about me coming to Liverpool at the time,” Götze said in 2016. “I definitely should have gone to Liverpool. I just made a wrong decision, but it’s not a regret.”
Götze on Liverpool: Could it have been different under Klopp?
The young Götze, who was in the best form of his career in his first Dortmund appearance, mostly came under Klopp. The chance to join him at Liverpool was on the horizon – but he returned to Dortmund six years ago.
Now, on reflection, Götze admits he should have returned to Klopp – and perhaps it’s a move that would have seen him rediscover some of the dizzying heights of form he originally displayed. But that’s hypothetical.
Injuries can be hard to ignore and in the tough, physical Premier League, Götze’s fragile vulnerability to injuries might have suffered more. He now meets Leicester in the Conference League at the King Power on Thursday.
