Speculation is mounting that Liverpool are interested in signing Vitinha this summer.
The 22-year-old has been a dynamic figure in Porto’s midfield this season.
And Record in Portugal reported on Saturday that Liverpool are among clubs interested in the player.
Obviously, Jurgen Klopp, the Reds manager, and football director Michael Edwards have the most influence over who signs and sells the Anfield team.
However, a different character could stand behind the interest of Vitinha.
After the record report, Oh Jogo [print edition 26/03, page 10] reported that Klopp’s assistant Pep Lijnders is “keeping an eye on” the midfielder.
It adds that the young Portuguese talent has a release clause of around £33million, which is easily within Liverpool’s budget.
Lijnders has been touted as a potential Klopp replacement.
According to The Athletic’s James Pearce, Liverpool could hire the Dutchman if Klopp leaves the club in 2024, which is known to be the year the German retires.
And it’s plausible that if Lijnders is really the one pulling the strings behind the Vitinha stake, he’s preparing for life as a manager.
It’s not very common for deputy managers to be the ones who spark interest in transfer targets.
And if the Vitinha speculation turns out to be genuine, it will certainly be interesting to see if Lijnders is really correct is is being prepared for the job in Liverpool in the long term.
