The 49ers’ defense gets even better with the addition of DT Javon Hargrave

The San Francisco 49ers hit the jackpot and reportedly agreed a deal with Philly Eagles Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave. That deal is worth $84 million over four years, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. That’s a nice raise for the Pro Bowler while the rich get richer in San Francisco.
Hargrave was a big piece of the puzzle in the Eagles’ Super Bowl last season, with 11 sacks (runner-up on team), 10 tackles for loss and 60 total tackles. He was selected to his first Pro Bowl in 2021 with 7.5 sacks. With Hargrave helping anchor the center, Philly had one of the best defenses in the league.
How will Hargrave affect the 49ers’ defense?
Now, last year, Hargrave goes from best to best defense for the Niners in many key statistical categories. It’s funny how a few months ago the former third-round pick decided to join the team that beat his Eagles in the NFC title game. If the 49ers hadn’t had so many problems at quarterback, this game might have been very different.
San Francisco and Philadelphia ranked #1 and #2 in the NFL for total yards allowed last year. The Niners ended the year in first place in points allowed at just over 16 per game. Philly finished eighth in that category. SF put on one hell of a run in the second half of the season, winning 10 in a row to end the season 22. Including the postseason, the 49ers had 12 straight wins before losing to the Eagles in Philly for the NFC Championship.
Mr Hargrave’s takeover is like a cherry on your sundae. You might have been fine without the cherry, but you’re glad to have it when it’s there. The San Francisco defense was great last year, and now they should be even better. And now the Jimmy The Garoppolo saga is over, since he has reportedly signed with the Las Vegas Raiders, the team can finally move forward offensively. There could be a real QB fight 49ers training camp in between Brock Purdy And Trey Lance, with both returning from injury. Also, the offensive loses face Mike McGlinchey to Denver, but they will surely find an adequate replacement.
Defensively, the Niners look like they’re among the top of the league and likely among the best again. Even losing DeMeco Ryans to a head coaching position at Houston and bringing in Steve Wilkes as a replacement was a sneaky good move. Wilkes proved in Carolina that he deserved another chance as head coach, but it didn’t come to that. He’ll step into the DC role in SF, and they shouldn’t miss a beat. San Francisco is positioned and ready to win now, especially on defense. If they can keep a QB on the field, there’s no reason they can’t represent the NFC in Super Bowl LVIII.
