The 2022 Golden Globes may have been a rather light and under-aired affair, but it still has plenty of drama when it comes to the winners and losers of the awards.
It also proved to be a monumental occasion with some notable firsts for the ceremony trying to regain its reputation in Hollywood. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) has organized a scale-up event that many celebrities and studios have chosen to boycott.
Despite the absence of winners and nominees, a number of celebrities such as Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis barely spoke at the event. A number of different voices were also invited to speak at the ceremony, as HFPA strives to rebuild bridges with industry and audiences.
While all of that is happening in the background, there are still plenty of winners to celebrate at this year’s awards. Here are the five biggest shocks from the 2022 Golden Globe Awards.
1. Nicole Kidman
One of the biggest disturbances came in one of the main categories when Nicole Kidman beat out fellow stars Kristen Stewart, Lady Gaga, Olivia Colman and Jessica Chastain to win Best Actress in a Motion Picture Drama photo – TV series.
Stewart is the favorite in this category for her performance as Princess Diana in Spencer, while Colman was also a favorite until her turn in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Daughter is gone.
But it was Australian actress Kidman who bested her role as Lucille Ball in the comedy biopic Being a Ricardian.
2. The power of the dog
Jane Campion’s The power of the dog was expected to be a great success, but its level of success was beyond expectations at the Golden Globes 2022.
The 1920s western, based on the novel by Thomas Savage, won three awards: Best Picture – Drama, Best Director for Campion, and Best Supporting Actor in Cinema for Kodi Smith-McPhee. Smit-McPhee talked to Newsweek about his role in the movie and the buzz of awards season when the movie came out on Netflix.
While The power of the dog performed above expectations, Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst fell short in their respective acting categories. It also lost Best Original Score and Best Screenplay.
3. Mj Rodriguez
It was a night to remember for many reasons, but an epic one for Mj Rodriguez, who became the first transgender person to win a Golden Globe. She won the award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Blanca Rodriguez-Evangelista in the FX TV series. Posture.
Insiders may have predicted the win for her stellar performance on the series but Rodriguez still topped out in a category that included Elisabeth Moss, Christine Baranski and Jennifer Aniston.

Sitcoms Ted Lasso seemed unstoppable for the past year at award ceremonies, until Hacks step up to the championship at the Golden Globes 2022. The HBO Comedy Max wins Best Drama – Musical or Comedy, beating the bookies’ favourites Ted Lasso as Wonderful thing, There are only murders in the building and Booking dog.
As well as winning for film, Jean Smart won Best Performance by an Actress in a Drama Series – Musical or Comedy. She beat her co-star Hannah Einbinder in the same category.
5. O Yeong-su
Anyone who has been online in the past year won’t be surprised to see that Squid fishing game won the award at the Golden Globes 2022. With a total of three nominations, the award Squid fishing game Real victory can come as a shock.
O Yeong-su plays the old man Oh Il-nam in the film and won the Best Supporting Actor award in a series, mini-series or television series. He beat out three-time nominee Kieran Culkin, Emmy Award winner Brett Goldstein, and Morning the duo Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass. Unfortunately, Squid Game has lost the Best TV Series – Drama to its hands Heir, and lead actor Lee Jung-jae lost to Jeremy Strong in Best Performance in a Drama – Drama.
