The £56million star turned down the transfer from Tottenham for very emotional reasons – and it has paid off

Villarreal defender Pau Torres turned down a summer move to Tottenham Hotspur – and that move has absolutely paid off.

Tottenham were on the hunt for a new centre-back last summer and opted for a big move in Villarreal defender Torres.

Agreement was reached for a massive £56m move for Torres but Tottenham signed Cristian Romero instead.

So what happened?

Despite being offered a huge salary at Tottenham, Torres told the Guardian that playing for his hometown club in the Champions League was more important than money.

Torres and Villarreal managed to break out of a group that included Atalanta, Manchester United and Young Boys.

Villarreal then eliminated Juventus in the knockout stages and their Champions League run looked to have peaked.

A clash with Bayern Munich looked like a bridge too far for Villarreal but they thrive on doubters.

After a 1-0 win in the first leg, Villarreal drew 1-1 in Germany on Tuesday night, Samuel Chukwueze sending them through.

Villarreal are now in the semi-finals and are likely to meet Liverpool in the semi-finals – and while the Reds will be favourites, you can’t rule out Unai Emery’s side.

Precisely for this reason, Torres rejected Tottenham; for the chance to do something special with Villarreal.

Winning the Europa League last season wasn’t enough. Torres also wanted to shine in the Champions League and that run has certainly gone further than he expected.

Tottenham will be disappointed that Torres hasn’t joined as he is a good centre-back.

But his story is heartwarming and a sign that money isn’t always everything, even in the modern game.

Torres and Villarreal are now just two games away from a definitive appearance and Torres can point to the fact that this run was exactly what he wanted – even if it meant snubbing the wealth at Tottenham.
