Aston Villa would be a “better choice” for Leeds star Kalvin Phillips than Premier League giants Manchester United, says former England international Gabby Agbonlahor talkSPORT (April 28, 9:30 a.m.).

If Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds are known for helping talented, up-and-coming youngsters reach their full potential – and helping EFL stars Luke Ayling, Liam Cooper and Stuart Dallas become high-profile stars – then the opposite is true of their bitter rivals from the other side of the Pennines.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, Jadon Sancho, Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford; These are just some of the players whose development ended up quite tragically at Old Trafford.

Of course, the Premier League’s perennial underachievers could yet be revived with the appointment of Erik Ten Hag – a truly elite tactician – but who could really blame Phillips if he chooses to give Man United the cold shoulder?

Of course, United’s terrible track record of handling the development of Sancho and Co isn’t the only reason Phillips – a die-hard Leeds fanatic and an academy graduate at that – would have qualms about following Alan Smith’s footsteps.

Will Kalvin Phillips turn down Man United move?

“I don’t think Kalvin Phillips would do that as he is a huge Leeds fan himself. I don’t think he would go to Manchester United,” predicts former Villa captain Agbonlahor.

“And I’m hearing that Aston Villa might be in for Kalvin Phillips. I think that would be the better choice for him.”

The times report that Leeds are set to ask around £60m for Phillips, the 2021 England player of the year.

It’s a testament to the ambition and financial strength of Aston Villa owners that a record-breaking move to the Midland giants is still being discussed as a realistic possibility.

“Our owners are among the wealthiest in the Premier League, after the owners of Newcastle, United and Man City,” adds Agbonlahor.

“Aston Villa has very, very rich owners. I’m sure Kalvin Phillips would love to come to Birmingham from Leeds.”
