Tammy Abraham admits Arsenal wanted to sign him last summer after reports linked the Roma striker with a Premier League return the athlete.
Not so long ago, English footballers were as rare as chicken teeth on the continent. But gone are the days when Owen Hargreaves, then of Bayern Munich, was the only non-Prem member in the Three Lions squad.
These days you have Fikayo Tomori at AC Milan. Jude Bellingham at Borussia Dortmund. England’s most prolific goalscorer in the game right now is showing his stuff in Rome rather than London, Manchester or Liverpool.
Abraham’s debut season at the Stadio Olimpico was a resounding success. In 46 games he has scored 24 goals – two more than Harry Kane scored at Tottenham Hotspur.
As a result, Arsenal back-up Abraham has emerged as one of the Gunners’ top targets alongside Gabriel Jesus, Victor Osimhen, Alexander Isak and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, while Mikel Arteta and Edu Gaspar intensify their pursuit of a number 9 under the influence of Pierre- Emerick Aubameyang at Emirates Stadium.
However, Arsenal will have no choice but to put their money where their mouth is. Roma want £70m for a player the London giants could have signed for 50 per cent less nearly 12 months ago (FL).
Tammy Abraham joins his youth club?
“Yeah, I’ve had a few (offers last summer),” says the former Aston Villa and Bristol City loanee. “Arsenal’s dropped out (in the public domain) and there were other clubs too.
“But it’s never black and white and just talking to (Jose) Mourinho and Roma and the sporting director, they had an ambition and a goal. They wanted the club to achieve certain goals.
“They hadn’t won a trophy for a while and didn’t do as well in the league as they would have liked.”
As Roma take on Leicester City in the UEFA Conference League semi-finals, the Giallorrosi could still end Mourinho’s first season with her first silverware since the 2008 Coppa Italia.
“It was about seeing a vision and … how should I put it? It’s exactly what Newcastle (United) is doing: building again,” adds Abraham.
“I could see where Mourinho wanted me and he believed in me. This was the best place for me. Thank god I made it.”
