The art project helps patients at Jefferson Health Magee Rehabilitation Hospital in Philadelphia seek inspiration

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — An art project at a Philadelphia rehabilitation hospital inspires patients every time they “look up.”

The “LookUp! Project began in the art therapy studio at Jefferson Health Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, but its popularity quickly sees it spread to other parts of the hospital.

“Definitely a good starting point for people to learn about art therapy when they first come into the hospital because it’s not every day you look up and you see art on the ceiling,” said Julie Nolan, the in-hospital art therapist.

Instead of the typical white tiles, the ceiling in her studio is colorful with messages like “Believe”.

Patients work together on the masterpieces.

“We fall backwards a lot in wheelchairs, [lying] Lying in bed, working out on mats, working out in the gym, so a lot of patients spend a lot of time looking at the ceiling,” Nolan said.

One of the patients working on the tiles is Susan Jones.

“It’s a relaxing time to spend, I could spend all day here,” Jones said while working on a project.

She, like all of Magee’s patients, is recovering from a traumatic injury. Art therapy helps her work on her fine motor skills and cognition and gives her a respite from the hospital environment.

“You can pretty much do anything that interests you,” she says.

The program has become so popular that it’s popping up in other areas of the hospital, like the gym. It makes it so that when patients lie down for their therapy, they look up and get inspired.

“You can see her face lighten up a little bit and a sense of lightness comes over her,” Nolan said.

The tiles carry messages of hope in bursts of color, and the project works wonders by helping patients recover from trauma.

“You see all the different ideas, it gives you inspiration,” Jones said.
