“The basic relief that is needed is immigration reform”

Speaking on CNN’s The Lead on Friday, DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas responded to a tweet by Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) that repealing Title 42 is terrible for the country and will cause Democrats to lose elections by saying people whose requests for relief are unsuccessful will be removed from the country and that “we are working with a broken immigration system, and the basic relief that is needed is immigration reform.”

Mayorkas explained, “I’m not looking at it through a political lens, Jake. The CDC has determined that we are advanced in our fight against the pandemic to be able to end the use of track 42 on May 23rd. We plan and prepare accordingly. We are a nation of immigrants and a nation of laws. If an individual in a Title 42 environment petitions for relief, if they petition for relief as our laws provide, if that claim is successful, they have established a basis for staying here. If not, they will be removed. And we know very well that the smuggling organizations manipulate the news and spread disinformation. And let me be absolutely clear, and I can’t say this too often, if someone’s request for relief is unsuccessful, they’re expelled from the United States. And what I want to say to Sen. Romney and every senator and every member of the House is that we are operating with a broken immigration system and the fundamental relief that we need is immigration reform.”
