Kelsie Dolin captured America’s hearts in early 2022 when she overcame deep insecurities and plucked up the courage to share her voice in the early rounds of “American Idol.” Many fans were upset when the 18-year-old from West Virginia was eliminated in season 20 by celebrity judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan – who were brought to tears at her first audition – before announcing her top 24 gave.
In fact, while she didn’t make it to the live shows, Dolin was so popular that she was named one of them in early December 2022 Country Now nominees for the best contestants of the year. But now the new mum, who surprised fans by announcing she was pregnant shortly after leaving Idol, has revealed that times are so tough she’s missing out on basics for her four-month-old can afford.

Two months later, on August 10, she shared that she had just given birth to her first child, Carter Lee James Dolin an Instagram photo cuddling her newborn in her hospital bed.
She wrote: “You meet Carter Lee James Dolin!! He is so beautiful… so thankful for a healthy baby and a smooth delivery! Will post more soon!!! I love you!!”
Dolin has posted a handful of photos of baby Carter clearly smitten with their baby since his birth. But on Dec. 18, she posted a message to her Instagram Stories, revealing how difficult it’s been making ends meet since becoming a mom and hoping she could get help from fans.
Dolin wrote: “I’ll probably lose followers because of this but we’re almost out of diapers and wipes, I have no way of getting any by the end of the month so I’m posting this and just praying someone can help out please write.” me if you can.”
Dolin shared a picture of her Cash App account – $KelsieDolin17 – and a second message that said, “Y’all I really need some help… my baby is almost out of diapers and I need help getting them, me.” am in between jobs rn and we are in the process of relocating everything is helping and if you can’t help that’s ok just please pray for us while we take care of these things! We really need it.”
On her profile, Dolin also lists her PayPal and Venmo accounts, which are held under Kelsie Dolin. After “Idol” and before Carter was born, Dolin made ends meet by working at a local McDonald’s to the West Virginia Herald Register.

As sinkhole first sang in front of the “Idol” jury, It was the first time the confident teenager had ever made a public appearance. She made them all cry with her sweet, pure voice and story of her resilience.
Raised by her grandparents due to her mother’s addiction issues, Dolin tried to honor her grandma who died of COVID on September 1, 2021. Dolin told producers that her grandma used to encourage her to audition, but that she was also terrified. She told the West Virginia Register-Herald in March 2022 that she had signed up to audition for the show before, but was always too nervous to actually show up — until season 20.
In a segment that aired as part of Dolin’s Hollywood audition, the teen chatted to her grandpa as she wheeled him around her small hometown and shared her own tough childhood with the producers.
“My grandparents are like my parents,” she said. “I was almost two years old and my sister was born, and she was born addicted to opiates and all kinds of junk. So my grandparents took us away before the state could.”
“It’s her dream,” her grandfather said, “and I’m just so happy and proud of her that she’s finally doing it.”
Weeks after struggling through online auditions and getting to sing for the celebrity judges, they told her she had “zero” bad grades and dabbed her eyes as she sang.
Terrified but talented, Dolin made it through the duet challenge during Hollywood Week with much support and encouragement from her partner, former Miss America Betty Maxwell. However, Dolin developed great stage fright before her solo performance. Celebrity mentor Lauren Alaina worked alongside her and gave her moving words of encouragement, and the teen not only made it through her performance, but received a standing ovation from the judges.
Dolin earned another standing ovation in front of a packed theater after her Showstoppers performance, but the jury decided she wasn’t ready to move on to the live rounds just yet. Richie broke the news, telling Dolin that he loved “seeing the light in you. This is your new you.”
“I think ‘American Idol’ changed my life,” Dolin said tearfully after her departure. “I think the Kelsie before that was very withdrawn and shy and put herself down. I’m just grateful.”
