The Block 2022: Neale Whitaker opens up on Omar and Oz’s recent piano scandal

Block judge Neale Whitaker says Omar and Oz deserved to be disqualified in Sunday night’s episode of the renovation series following last week’s living room and dining room challenge.

The best friends broke the rules by buying a baby grand for their room at a heavily discounted price.

The interior designer, 70, insisted the decision was fair when he appeared on Today Extra on Monday.

“The rules are the rules are the rules,” Neale told host David Campbell.

“Even they know the rules like all participants and they shouldn’t buy anything below 50% of retail price. And the boys did.

“On the one hand it was fantastic to see a wing on The Block – we’ve only seen one I think once – if at the end of the day they break the rules they deserve the punishment.”

Omar and Oz were bitterly disappointed when they were disqualified on Sunday.

The boys delivered a near-perfect space and the judges heaped praise on them, but it wasn’t long before they got an ear from host Scott Cam.

“$7,500, that’s what we got it for,” Omar said after suspicions were raised about where they got the money for the piano.

“That’s impossible, they retail for $36,000,” Scott retorted.

As per The Block rules, teams can only get 50 percent off the retail price.

The boys ended up breaking the rules after receiving such a heavily discounted product, which meant they had three points deducted.

“You can’t expect me to let that slip, boys,” Scott Cam said.

“We’re more than willing to put in the extra $10,000…” Omar trailed off as Scott explained that this was “the chicken before the egg.”

The boys were penalized with a three-point deduction, improving their overall score from 28.5 to 25.5 out of 30, effectively disqualifying the pair.

The block continues on Monday at 7.30pm on Channel Nine.
