According to the Daily mailManchester City have put Leeds United’s Kalvin Phillips at the top of their list of potential Fernandinho substitutes.
The Brazilian midfielder has played his last game for the Premier League champions and City could find it difficult to replace their club captain.
In fact, there aren’t many players in world football who can match Fernandinho’s skills as a defensive midfielder, but City believe Phillips could be their best choice.
To be fair, we can understand why. After all, he’s been called “brilliant” by Jordan Henderson in the past.
Phillips is an energetic and tactically adept defensive midfielder and his eye for passing has even earned him the nickname The Yorkshire Pirlo.
Take into account that, much like Fernandinho, he can also work in central defense when needed and Phillips is starting to look like a fantastic replacement for the Brazilian.
Of course, getting Phillips out of Leeds is easier said than done.
The midfielder is a childhood supporter of the Yorkshire club, he’s a local lad who’s gone through the academy and he’s incredibly loyal to the Elland Road team.
On the other hand, Manchester City is one of the richest and most successful clubs in the world and it would be incredibly hard for any player to turn down a move to join Pep Guardiola, especially since they can offer the chance to fight for a Champions League title.
This will be an interesting saga to follow well into the summer. The England international could have a big decision to make in the coming weeks and if City call it could be difficult to turn down Pep Guardiola.
Leeds are keen to tie Phillips to a new contract but the allure of joining the Premier League champions could be too great to resist.
