The fatal shootings of three missing rappers, whose bodies were found in an abandoned Michigan apartment, were linked to gangs, police said this week.
Armani Kelly, 27, Montoya Givens, 31, and Dante Wicker, 31, disappeared on January 21 while they were scheduled to perform at a show that was canceled at Detroit’s Lounge 31. Their bodies were found in the basement of an apartment.
Michigan State Police tweeted that the case was a gang violence incident and urged those with knowledge to come forward.
“We know there are a lot of media/social media rumors surrounding this investigation,” the agency said called. “While we must keep some things private, we know a few things: No one is in custody for this murder. This murder was no accident and had nothing to do with music or a performance.”
Givens’ mother, Catina Fogle, told WDIV-TV, an affiliate of NBC Detroit, that she didn’t know why anyone would target her son. She told the news channel he was trying to get his life back on track after serving a jail sentence for carjacking a pastor.
“I haven’t seen the news and I haven’t been on social media,” she told the broadcaster. “All I know is that my son was found in that apartment building, dead. I’m just hearing that I think they’ve found two or three people to be involved. I have no idea.”
“What everyone’s saying is gang related, I don’t know if it’s gang related or not,” she added.
Details of the case were sketchy. Police said the victims’ bodies were found on February 2 in a cold, rat-infested basement of an apartment in Highland Park, near Detroit.
The victims had been in prison. Kelly and Givens were on probation at the time of their disappearance, according to the state corrections agency, the Associated Press reported.
The men met in prison, the Detroit News reported. Kelly, 27, from Oscoda, performed under the alias Marley Whoop. Wicker, 31, of Melvindale, used the stage name “B12,” the newspaper reported.
