The emotions of Obi-Wan Kenobi and Anakin Skywalker’s reunion were very real to Ewan McGregor

Obi-Wan Kenobi didn’t shy away from using the “L” word in Revenge of the Sith, and neither did Ewan McGregor. McGregor recalled how he and Christensen first met on the set of Attack of the Clones in Australia (“You were a young, young, young actor”), and said the meaning of the reunion brought them all up once met when their characters were finally on par again.
“Our lives happened between then and now. And there was something about the experience of working together again… We just love each other, you know? And we hadn’t seen each other for so long. And so on. The moment it was shot, all of that was alive in the scene.”
McGregor’s affection for his co-star added to the warmth that was already in the room, and the Celebration Stage frequently erupted in applause and scattered cries of support for Christensen as he contemplated his own return to the Star Wars universe. “In the context of the saga, it’s a great piece of ‘Star Wars,'” he said. “And a really important scene, not only to the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker, but also to the tragedy of Anakin and Obi-Wan’s relationship.”
While first personally thanking director Deborah Chow and giving credit to the script, Christensen’s greatest praise was for McGregor’s portrayal of the devastated Obi-Wan: “So much of what makes this scene work is Ewan’s performance and the heartbreak you experience.”
Obi-Wan Kenobi is available to stream on Disney+.
