The final NASCAR Cup race at North Wilkesboro as a track heralds the return

North Wilkesboro will again host race cars with news that the track will reopen, but when should the last NASCAR Cup race be held at this venue?

As NASCAR has experimented with the Cup Series schedule over the past several years, one venue has emerged as one that fans, teams and drivers would love to revisit.

North Wilkesboro Speedway.

However, the track is in a state of disrepair as the facilities are nowhere near cup level and the surface is slowly being reclaimed by the elements.

However, racing returns to North Wilkesboro.

The track has announced that grassroots racing will return in the fall, followed by dirt races.

The surface will be repaved in 2023 in the hope that Cup cars will one day grace the venue again.

But when was the last NASCAR Cup race in North Wilkesboro? Who got the last win on the short track in North Carolina?

Last NASCAR Cup race at North Wilkesboro

The .625 mile oval first appeared on the NASCAR calendar in the 1949 inaugural cup season.

With the exception of 1949, 1950 and 1956, two races were held at North Wilkesboro every year the track was on the calendar.

In 1996, as NASCAR continued to grow and overtook North Wilkesboro, the last Cup race to date was held.

The winner was Jeff Gordon in the #24 Hendrick Chevrolet, beating great rival Dale Earnhardt Sr. in his #3 Childress machine by 1.3 seconds.

After the last NASCAR race in North Wilkesboro, the venue’s two cup slots were reallocated.

One went to the Texas Motor Speedway, the other to the Short Track in New Hampshire.

Who has the most wins?

North Wilkesboro has been on the cup calendar for 47 years with 93 races on its books.

Predictably, NASCAR’s greatest icon holds the record for most track wins.

Richard Petty has won 200 times in his cup career – 15 of them at North Wilkesboro.

In 1962 he won the spring race for the first time and in 1981 his last at the spring race.

Darrell Waltrip is also in double digits with 10 – he won six out of seven races there from fall 1981 to fall 1984. Only Tim Richmond ended DW’s run in the spring of 1984.

Earnhardt and Cale Yarborough both have five wins each.
