The gay man, 42, has been branded a ‘spoiled brat’ after forcing his father to leave the GOP by threatening to disown himself

A gay man living in Washington state has been branded a “spoiled brat” after telling his entire family to stop voting Republican and forcing his father to leave the GOP.
Ryan Short, 42, had a conversation with his 80-year-old father, Richard, a veteran who lives in Dallas, Texas.
“We were just having one of our random catch-ups and he just casually said, ‘I’m still a Republican,'” Short said, and his father reiterated this after Ryan addressed the GOP’s anti-LGBTQ rhetoric.
The next day, he emailed dozens of family members, saying, “You cannot vote for the GOP and continue to have a relationship with me. No exceptions.’
He added, “The safety and peace of myself, my husband and my community is fundamental, non-negotiable and has nothing to do with politics,” Short wrote. “Voting GOP is dividing the family.”

Ryan Short (pictured left), 42, chatted with his 80-year-old father, Richard (pictured right), a veteran who lives in Dallas, Texas. When his father said he was Republican, he asked his entire family to stop voting for the GOP
He made that request, adding that he’s “not inviting dialogue and I’m not interested in nuance.”
Short told Insider that at 42, he “don’t want to waste my time on things that don’t bring any light into my life.”
“That letter was a boundary, not a conviction,” he added. “It was not intended to convince anyone.”
He tweeted the email, as well as a negative reaction from a family member, and received over 15,000 likes.
However, not everyone saw it the way Short saw it, with one user saying, “You’re an ungrateful, disrespectful brat and I’m sure your parents regret having you after that hateful letter.”
Another called it “narcissistic and painful to read.” When I was younger, I had to write a letter because my family aggressively tried to make me “non-gay” for several years. Ah, if only our biggest argument were about politics. Feels like a whole generation has no idea what real discrimination looks like.’
However, Short has seen positives from the letter’s publication, noting that young people with different identities have asked if they could use it themselves.
‘I was like, ‘Do it man, how open source that shit! We are only free when we are all free.”

Short wrote that email to dozens of family members, saying, “You cannot vote for the GOP and continue to have a relationship with me. No exceptions.’

He wanted people to know that he has multiple LGBTQ relatives and even those who aren’t support him, but he just thinks their political beliefs don’t support them.
“We don’t have anyone in my family who doesn’t like queer family or doesn’t support issues. It’s just a specific action to vote for the people who do this.”
Short, whose Twitter account is currently suspended, said he received mostly positive responses and confirmations that family members would no longer vote Republicans.
Eventually, he was even able to get his father on his side, despite an initial reaction he described as “quick, without thinking.”
“Family is family,” said Richard Short. “As a hardhead, I’m a little hard to get hold of,” said Richard Short. “But then I’m one of those people, I sit back and think and think about what I said and I apologize very quickly.”
Not only did he agree to no longer vote for the GOP, he resigned from the Collin County Republican club of which he is a member.
“I was so worried that I had lost my son.” said Richard Kurz. “And fortunately I have a son in Ryan who has accepted my sincere, open and honest apologies.”
