What story do you think would deserve to push Europe’s biggest war in nearly 80 years out of the headlines of the day? If you said the private text messages of a Supreme Court Justice’s wife, you seem qualified to run a major American newsroom.

That’s the leaked news the Washington Post posted at the top of its homepage Thursday night. Someone gave reporter Bob Woodward and his protégé Robert Costa the contents of 29 text messages in 2020 and 2021 between Mark Meadows, then White House Chief of Staff, and Ginni Thomas, wife of Justice Clarence Thomas.

Mrs. Thomas sent 21 of the messages and Mr. Meadows sent eight. All but one are from November 2020, in the early days after Joe Biden was declared the winner of the presidential election. The House Selection Committee received the messages from Mr. Meadows on January 6 as part of its investigation.

The Post applauds the messages, which show “how Ginni Thomas used her access to Trump’s inner circle to promote and direct the president’s strategy to overturn the election results.” Sounds shameful until you understand the back and forth hasn’t come up with anything meaningful.

The messages are certainly not flattering for Ms. Thomas, who has long been active in conservative political circles. They show that, dismayed by the election result, she gave in to some of the crazier vote-fraud theories as the Trump campaign challenged the results in court.

“Help this great President stand firm Mark!!!” she wrote on Nov. 10. “You are the leader, with him, who stands on the precipice of America’s constitutional government. The majority knows Biden and the left is attempting the biggest heist in our history.”

Mrs. Thomas suggests that attorney Sidney Powell be “the lead and the face” of the Trump legal team. Ms Powell is being sued for defamation by a voting machine company for spreading falsehoods. There is no evidence that voting machines were rigged to alter votes in 2020. Even the Trump team dumped Ms Powell as they concluded she had no evidence.

Trump’s other legal challenges to the election have failed in multiple courts across the country for lack of evidence. Mrs Thomas has admitted to attending the Stop the Steal rally on January 6 but says she left early and to date there is no evidence that she had any role in organizing the rally played, which turned into a riot.

All of this raises the question as to why this news was leaked. There’s no reason to make them public now, and maybe never if they’re tangent to what happened on January 6th. As a private person, Mrs. Thomas can believe any crazy theories she wants, and she has the right to participate in politics, even as a judge’s wife.

The leak may have been revenge against Ms. Thomas for signing a letter from Conservative activists in December 2021 objecting to the Jan. 6 committee’s establishment and calling on the House GOP to include committee members Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger exclude their conference.

The timing of the leak suggests another purpose is to damage Judge Thomas as the Supreme Court prepares to make important decisions on gun and abortion rights. And indeed, the Woodward bullet served was followed by demands that Judge Thomas resign, or at least withdraw from cases involving the election.

He is allegedly implicated in his wife’s messages because he was the only judge to contradict a Jan. 19 Supreme Court decision that President Trump could not prevent the National Archives from giving the Special Committee documents from his White House days . But the Woodward story says the select committee got the messages from Mr. Meadows, not the National Archives.

Mrs. Thomas’s text messages are embarrassing, but amount to an outsider teasing and sympathizing with the White House Chief of Staff. They are no reason for Judge Thomas to retire from cases involving the Trump administration.

The January 6th Committee advertises itself as a non-partisan investigative body. But then she should wait to publish her report until the facts are complete. The Ginni Thomas leaks are a political dig that will make it harder to appreciate his conclusions.
