The interest of countries in joining the BRICS shows its relevance, says Lula

(Reuters) – Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said Thursday the interest of other countries in joining the BRICS organization shows how relevant their quest for a new world economic order is.

“We remain open to new candidates,” Lula said at a news conference in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Argentina, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia have shown interest in joining the BRICS organization, he said, adding that Iran is also interested.

During a summit in South Africa, the BRICS group of countries also passed a resolution to consider creating a “new payment currency” in the future.
