Didier Deschamps has praised William Saliba for the defender’s calmness and maturity in the Arsenal star’s France debut at home against Ivory Coast on Friday goal.
Saliba enjoyed his Les Bleus arc at the Stade de France in a friendly with Nicolas Pepe’s Les Elephants. Deschamps brought on the centre-backs in the 58th minute to replace Raphael Varane in the first substitution of the match which ended in a 2-1 victory for France.
Pepe broke the deadlock 19 minutes into the first half after beating Tottenham’s shot-stopper Hugo Lloris at his near post. Olivier Giroud then equalized with the 2018 world champions before Monaco ace Aurelien Tchouameni completed the comeback after 94 minutes.
The spectators at the Stade de France cheered Saliba on the pitch after shining on the pitch all season. He has flourished under Jorge Sampaoli during a season-long loan at Marseille which the £27 million star has hinted he’s ready to make this summer permanent.
Mikel Arteta let Saliba go and return to France on loan with Marseille after still making his Arsenal debut. The Gunners’ 2019 win under Unai Emery has spent just half a season in north London, during which he made eight appearances for the club’s under-23 side.
