The Argentine is set to join the Red Devils this summer but he was reportedly close to joining Arsenal.
While some Manchester United fans would like you to believe this was a one-horse race, according to Jacobs, Arsenal were in the game right to the end.
In fact, according to the journalist, the race was so close that Martinez showed a show of respect by actually calling Mikel Arteta personally this week to update him of his decision.

“What tells you the race has been open for a very long time is the fact that Martinez picked up the phone and personally told Arteta he wasn’t going to compete about 48 hours ago. So there was a lot of respect on the Arsenal side too. This was by no means a race for a club or a manager, Arsenal were firmly in it,” said Jacobs.

Martinez was reportedly sold for the Arsenal project and it sounds like he really needs to consider his next move here.
However, with Erik Ten Hag in charge at Old Trafford, a move to Manchester makes the most sense right now.
Indeed, Martinez knows the manager and his system, and moving to the Red Devils is a lot less risky than moving to the Gunners for that particular player right now.
Whether or not he regrets that decision remains to be seen, of course, but Martinez’s chance to sign with Arsenal now seems over.
