Speaking of Talking Transfers PodcastGraeme Bailey has discussed William Saliba’s options at Arsenal.
The Frenchman has just returned to north London after an impressive season on loan at Marseille. While many were expecting Saliba to play a key role at Arsenal this season, the Gunners are now facing another new centre-back.
Indeed, the London club has bid for Ajax’s Lisandro Martinez and, as you may have noticed, things remain in a somewhat complicated state for Saliba.
The Frenchman could now be the Gunners’ fourth center half behind Ben White, Gabriel and Martinez and understandably that’s not an ideal scenario for the youngster.
According to Bailey, another loan back to Marseille could be in the cards for Saliba if a new contract is signed.
what was said
Bailey opened up about Saliba after the Gunners increased their interest in Martinez.
“It’s a bit of a surprise, especially when Saliba comes back. I’m wondering if Saliba will sign a new contract and then go straight back to Marseille, that could be on the cards at Arsenal, I don’t think he would come back to play second string, which is already at Arsenal so it’s interesting that to keep an eye on, especially if Martinez goes in there,” Bailey said.
When does he get his chance?
If this is indeed Saliba’s plan, then he must be wondering what else he needs to do to get a chance at Arsenal.
The Frenchman has enjoyed two impressive loan spells at Nice and Marseille, has played for France’s senior team and yet is yet to make his Arsenal debut.
Maybe Mikel Arteta just doesn’t rate him, but we can’t figure out why for the life of us.
Of course, Arsenal’s offer for Martinez might go nowhere and Saliba could just step in like he expected, but the fact that Arsenal are bidding for the Argentine would suggest he could be brought on another loan.
