He spent the last few seasons on loan at Besiktas and Union Berlin.

But with Karius’ contract expiring in July, a permanent departure is only a few months away.

And with Werder Bremen well placed to secure a first-time Bundesliga return, Wiese believes one of Germany’s sleeping giants should be tempted to prove a 28-year-old with a real point.

Goodbye Loris Karius?

“In the top division, the club would have to look for a seasoned keeper,” says the Werder legend, who is now active as a professional wrestler called The Machine.

To each his own, yes?

“For me, Loris Karius would be one for Werder,” adds Wiese: “He’s a free transfer and hasn’t played for a long time. But in Mainz he showed what he can do.

“He has quality, otherwise Liverpool would not have signed him.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has already done so authorized that the 2020 Premier League champions have no plans to offer Karius a new contract, with Coamhin Kelleher, Adrian and Alisson Becker ensuring the Reds are currently showing both quality and quantity between the sticks.

Karius has also been linked with a move to Bundesliga basement fighter Greuther Furth. Head coach Stefan Leitl recently described the 28-year-old as “undoubtedly a very, very good goalkeeper” (table football).

Although Liverpool supporters are still waking up in cold sweats in Kyiv tonight, they may not share Leitl’s view.
