The Lions Are Motivated to Sign Takkarist McKinley in Free Agency

Takkarist McKinley

Takkarist McKinley played for Atlanta in 2019.

The Detroit Lions theoretically still have plenty of holes to fill when it comes to their roster, and despite the upcoming draft, freedom is still afoot for the team.

Better additions could help the Lions in rounding out their roster for the future, and with signings dwindling, players that still exist in the market can boost the Lions and help the team. Their figure spurred this season.

Bleacher Report’s David Kenyon has compiled a list of all the best free agents that are relevant at the moment for teams in the remaining players league. Upon arrival in Detroit, an interesting name in Takkerist McKinley was listed by Kenyon due to his ability to motivate him to be able to provide the final team pass speed when healthy.

“Pending the timeline for his Achilles recovery, McKinley could start 2022 on the injury list. Detroit can wait patiently for his return and hope for a season-ending push for the team to get through,” Kenyon wrote in the piece.

A player like McKinley would be a good fit for the Lions because he’s young and would give the team the edge they’re looking for in a short-term deal. He’s also close to injury, so that means he could be seen as a potential value if things go right.

Lions Pass Rush can still use Boost

The Lions spent last season building their roster, but one spot they didn’t choose to do much work was along the defence. Detroit has re-signed Charles Harris for the line-up, and that’s important because he collected 7.5 sacks last year to help lead the team. Other than that, however, the Lions have not done anything externally to advance the position. This year, they will bring Romeo Okwara back from injury, a huge number for them in driving depth of position. Even so, the Lions will want to see if they can add something to the list or the rest of the free or draft agency.

Detroit reckons to add a player with their second overall pick to help them rush the passer, but signing someone like McKinley could help the team because it involves figuring out what kind of dimension it is. depth they need and allows them to be more open-minded in the NFL draft.

McKinley Stats & Highlights

A first-round pick at the age of 27 in 2017 for UCLA, McKinley is a player who comes into the tournament with high expectations and fans as much as it involves being a player. That didn’t happen right away for him, leading some to claim McKinley was a bust. During his NFL career, he hit only 97 tackles and totaled 20 hits. He wants to leave Atlanta, then make his way to Las Vegas, where he can’t play due to injury. McKinley signed with Cleveland in 2021, where he was fired only 1.5 times this past season.

In college, McKinley was one of the more explosive people in college, so he had a track record to lean on. Whether he can return to that level remains to be seen, according to some pundits, but the Lions could be the team that gives him the opportunity to do so. Many people believe that they should move.
