The nation’s media have ‘tempered’ the Leeds star 8/10 for the weekend show, a ‘major threat’.

Booked Wales ended a 64-year wait by booking their place at the 2022 World Cup on Sunday – and Leeds star Dan James was praised by the Welsh media. The attacker received a rating of 8/10, from Wales Online.

James, 24, was a regular for Leeds in a back-and-forth season in which he scored just four goals in 37 games. But he was deployed out of position amid a huge injury list – ahead of a straight red card against Chelsea in May.

However, the England-born ace earned his 33rd cap for Wales at the Cardiff City Stadium on Sunday. The goal was clear, to beat Ukraine and Wales would qualify for their first World Cup since 1958.

They did just that thanks to a deflected free-kick from Gareth Bale. But they had Wayne Hennessey to thank in goal for numerous saves and Tottenham star Ben Davies for his defensive blocks.

“He has created a number of promising opportunities for his team but may be struggling to show the kind of dexterity that is shown in Poland,” reports Wales Online, giving James an 8/10 score.

“On the other hand, his early yellow card and difficult conditions may have something to do with it. A spirited performance nonetheless and he was clearly perceived as a major threat by a physical Ukraine defense. Subordinate.”

Leeds star James gets praise for Wales: Discipline becoming a problem?

James was excellent. While Leeds fans will have recognized that lack of edge in terms of his finish or decision-making in the final third, he brought Wales onto the pitch. His workload was contagious.

Constantly worrying the Ukraine defence, he was a valve down the left flank and gave his defensive team-mates a breather. But his early yellow card was a clear sign of a lack of discipline.

James yells in the referee’s face for giving Joe Allen an early yellow and really needs to learn to roll it in. It comes after a red card at Chelsea and a yellow card for running against Palace’s Joel Ward. Something to work with.
