“The New Boy” wins top prize at Poland’s Camerimage Festival

For the second year in a row, a film starring Cate Blanchett has won the top prize at Poland’s EnergaCamerimage Festival, honoring the work of the world’s best cinematographers. This year, Aboriginal drama The New Boy won the Golden Frog for its cinematographer Warwick Thornton, who also happens to be the film’s director.

The film is about a nine-year-old Aboriginal orphan who is taken in by a rural monastery. It kindly premiered at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. However, there is currently no US release date for the film. In 2022, Todd Field’s “Tár” won the Golden Frog for Oscar-nominated cinematographer Florian Hoffmeister and also starred Blanchett.

The Silver Frog went to Pablo Larrain’s atmospheric vampire film “El Conde,” for which his legendary cinematographer Ed Lachman was honored. Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things” continued his awards streak, winning the Bronze Frog for lenser Robbie Ryan, a 2021 Golden Frog winner for Mike Mills’ “C’mon C’mon.” “Poor Things” also won the audience award in the big competition.

Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest won the FIPRESCI Prize over the International Federation of Film Critics Prize for Best Film, also increasing its awards momentum, photographed by former Camerimage winner Łukasz Żal.
