The Oscar Spending Statement after Will Smith and Chris Rock’s altercation

Will Smith and Chris Rock

Will Smith appears to meet Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued a statement about “violence” on Twitter in the early hours of March 28, 2022. The tweet was apparently about Will Smith slapping Chris Rock during the 94th Academy Awards, although neither actor is named.

“The Academy does not condone violence” The Academy’s official Twitter account wrote. “Tonight we are delighted to celebrate our 94th Oscar winners, who deserve this moment of recognition from their peers and film lovers around the world.”

In the most talked about moment, Rock joked that Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, would be appearing in a sequel to the 1997 film GI Jane. The comment was apparently in reference to the actress’ baldness, as the film’s main character is known to shave her head.

Pinkett Smith previously revealed that she was experiencing hair loss due to alopecia.
Although the moment was beeped in the United States, foreign broadcasts saw the moment unedited. A clip of the moment was shared on Instagram by Amanda Hirsch, the host of the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast.

“Wow, Will Smith just blew me away,” Rock said as Smith walked away. He added, “Wow dude that was a GI Jane joke.”

Smith repeatedly replied, “Keep my wife’s name out of your damn mouth.”

“I will, okay,” he added. “Okay, that was the biggest night in television history. So we’re here to release a documentary.”

The academy’s statement comes after the LAPD revealed that Rock refused to file a police report

The academy’s statement comes after the Los Angeles Police Department announced that Rock would not be charging Smith.

“LAPD investigative authorities are aware of an incident between two individuals during the Academy Awards program.” the LAPD spokesman said in a statement obtained by numerous news outlets. “In the incident, one person hit another. The person concerned declined to make a complaint to the police. If the party involved desires a police report at a later date, the LAPD is available to complete an investigative report.”

The Academy’s statement drew mixed reactions

The tweet drew mixed reactions.

A tweet evoked Rock’s wit. it read“Offending someone by joking about their physical condition in front of millions of people is also a form of violence, you know.”
Others cried badly as Smith stayed through the end of the ceremony and won Best Actor for his role in King Richard.

“You tolerated it” read a tweet. “They allowed Will Smith to sit there and then presented a major award, which he accepted with a bizarre speech trying to excuse his attack.”

Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter offered what he felt was a more appropriate testimony. He tweeted, “‘What happened at the ceremony tonight was unacceptable. It should never have happened and at the moment we have not been able to react decisively and we regret the way an already unfortunate situation has been handled. Our apologies to tonight’s winners and to the entire industry.’”
