The New England Patriots seem to have made it clear that the door remains open for the return of legendary quarterback and three-time Super Bowl champion Dont’a Hightower.
Hightower hasn’t made his plans for the future public, but the 32-year-old has played all nine of his NFL seasons with the Patriots yet to be signed. A report from The Athletic’s Jeff Howe says the Patriots “will welcome [Hightower] return with open arms,” if he wants to come back.
Besides, Mark Daniels of Providence Magazine tweeted a small detail he noticed as the media returned to the Patriots’ locker room after Thursday’s pre-season opener against the New York Giants:
Hightower won’t show one of his strongest seasons. Always more of a physics supporter, line of scenario than a side player, Hightower looks particularly slow and annoying in 2021.
He’s been sidelined the entire 2020 season on the COVID-19 opt-out list. Last season, Hightower appeared to have fallen victim to pass protection, and he tried to play his role to stop mobile midfielders like AFC East rival Josh Allen. by Buffalo Bills.
Hightower has had 64 tackles, 1.5 clearances, one loss tackle, 4 midfield hits and an approximate value of 8, per Professional Football Reference. Over the years, Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has always spoken enthusiastically about Hightower. While the aging quarterback is past his prime, if New England are willing to welcome him back and keep his locker open, they must believe he has something to offer.
Cameron McGrone is likely to get injured
New England have been hoping to have young midfielder Cameron McGrone make an impact this season. However, after missing all of his rookie season in 2021 to recover from a torn ACL, McGrone is seen with a “big wrap” on his elbow after his opening game last season on Thursday night, every Zack Cox by NESN.
If that injury proves to be serious, then the Patriots’ inner defender depth will suffer. Likewise, according to ESPN’s Mike ReissJahlani Tavai was injured on August 4.
Tavai returns to practice on August 8, every Evan Lazar of Patriots.combut he didn’t play on Thursday against the Giants.
Tavai’s availability will be an interesting story to watch heading into the Patriots’ second pre-season game.

- James White announces his retirement from professional football
Several Patriots players have paid their respects to James White who will retire on Thursday. Several current and former Patriots players have taken to social media to pay their respects to one of the most beloved players in recent team history.
White suffered a season-end hip injury in a Week 3 loss to the New Orleans Saints in 2021.
Injuries kept him on the bench injured and sidelined for the rest of the season. White started training camp with a no-match list alongside other veterans like David Andrews, Jabrill Peppers and Jonathon Jones. While Andres, Peppers, and Jones are activated and go to training camp, White remains on the shelf.
However, hearing his retirement announcement was a bit of a surprise. Coming up next season, New England could turn to Ty Montgomery and re-run rookie Pierre Strong Jr to play the passing catcher role that White has mastered during his time with the Patriots.
