The New York Yankees announced a series of moves Thursday, most notably including the return of veteran left-hander Zack Britton and the end of Miguel Andujar’s time in the Bronx.

Andújar, now 27, looked like an important long-term play for the Yankees not long ago. In his 2018 rookie season, Andújar upped the ante at the age of 23 OPS+ of 130 and had 27 homers, 47 doubles and 302 bases in 149 games (and finished second in Rookie of the Year to Shohei Ohtani).

However, since that peak Andújar has struggled greatly, struggling with major shoulder and wrist problems. Since the start of the 2019 season, Andújar has played in just 105 games at the MLB level, hitting .228/.255/.318 (55 OPS+) with eight homers in that span. Between stints with the Yankees, he has achieved solid to good numbers with the youngsters, but his inability to rediscover the skills he displayed as a rookie ultimately spelled the end of Andújar’s time with the organization.

The Pittsburgh Pirates requested Andújar from waivers on Sunday, the team said. The Pirates have just nine games to play this season, so the claim was likely made with the 2023 roster in mind. Pittsburgh haven’t had a seeded DH since Daniel Vogelbach sold out on the deadline. Andújar could fill the role cheaply next season.

The decision for DFA Andujar clears a spot on the 40-man list for Britton, who was on the 60-day injured list and therefore off the 40-man list. Wandy Peralta’s trip to the 15-day IL clears an active roster spot for Britton. Andújar is almost certainly under investigation by another organization and a fresh start is likely just what he needs after several seasons of injuries and struggles.
