The pundit is baffled by what happened to the 25-year-old Tottenham fans

Darren Bent has revealed there is “something deeper” going on with Dele Alli as his woes continue after leaving Tottenham at Everton.

The former striker tells talkSPORT that the 25-year-old, who once scored 18 Premier League goals in midfield for Spurs, is “too good to retire”. It was suggested that he should take this route from Stan Collymore.

Over a number of years, under various managers, Alli’s form had begun to decline and then fall off the footballing cliff.

Even under Mauricio Pochettino, the man who signed him and under whom he thrived the most, Alli’s form went in the wrong direction before Daniel Levy’s current PSG boss was sacked.

Now the attacking midfielder is struggling to even get into an Everton side struggling against relegation.

Bent shared his thoughts on Alli’s current situation, even comparing him to someone like David Bentley, who gave up his career before the age of 30.

“It looks like something deeper is going on,” Bent said. “But if I look at his situation and Marcus Rashford’s.

“You look at Marcus Rashford’s and you can tell pretty easily that something isn’t quite right. Even his demeanor. But Dele Alli always seems to be smiling and seems okay. And it’s just a complete loss of form.

“He didn’t even manage to find himself again. Go back to 16/17 when he was at his absolute best. That was a long, long time ago.

“He’s too good a player to retire now. Unless he’s completely estranged from him. I think it was David Bentley, he fell in love with him, then out of the blue he pulled out.”

It’s not just the number of goals Alli has scored at Spurs but the quality behind them that has been impressive.

From his volley at Crystal Palace to his brace against Chelsea, the England international has been hugely popular with Tottenham fans, and rightly so.

But his form under Pochettino started to hit the wrong notes, picking up a little under Jose Mourinho before warning the player when things went wrong again.

And then it never really got going again as the very demanding Antonio Conte couldn’t even get anything out of him.
