Rangers’ Calvin Bassey is the man of the hour and has now been endorsed to become the next Virgil van DIjk to emerge from Scotland.

Bassey joined Rangers in 2020 for just £230,000 and his move from Leicester City drew little attention.

The defender’s first season was largely spent as a backup for Borna Barisic on the left.

But Bassey has really developed this season and has made great strides since the arrival of Giovanni van Bronckhorst.

Van Bronckhorst played Bassey at left centre-back rather than left-back but isn’t afraid to use him there either.

Rangers’ Calvin Bassey is the man of the hour

Bassey stood out against Eintracht Frankfurt last week and was arguably the best player on the pitch in this Europa League final.

The 22-year-old has been branded a ‘superstar’ by pundit Don Hutchinson and there is now a real buzz surrounding Bassey.

The problem for Rangers is that Bassey naturally attracts a lot of interest from other clubs.

Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard is reportedly keen on Bassey and was in charge of Rangers when the defender arrived at Ibrox.

Rangers may not want to sell to Gerrard after he decides to go to Villa but there will be other clubs interested in Bassey anyway.

Now there was even more praise for Bassey, this time from former Scotland and Hearts defender Christophe Berra.

In conversation with Sportsound, as quoted by The Scottish SunBerra pointed out that Bassey is a “human mountain.”

Berra even believes Bassey could emerge as Scotland’s new Virgil van Dijk some seven years after the Liverpool star left Celtic.

Berra believes Bassey has absolutely everything as a central defender or even as a full-back, which seems to back him up for absolute glory.

“He’s a man mountain. No one can get past him,” Berra said. “I know he’s held in high esteem, but he could be the next Van Dijk-type character to come out of Scotland.”

“He has this potential, physically, he’s aggressive, he’s technically good on the ball. He’s strong, he can dribble and he has this flexibility where he can play left-back or centre-back,” he added.
