The realistic challenges Drew Brees faces with a potential return to the NFL

Drew Brees brought up the idea of a return to the NFL in a tweet in response to his reported departure from NBC, but is it realistic that he would consider a return?

A year after hanging up his helmet, Drew Brees is looking for employment again.

The Super Bowl winner’s time as an NBC analyst didn’t go as he or the network had hoped – he split just 12 months after a deal that saw Brees as long-term heirs to Cris Collinsworth.

In a tweet responding to the story, Drew Brees casually added that a return to the NFL to play was one possibility for his future, among other things.

But is that realistic?

Drew Brees, returning to the NFL, faces big challenges

Provided he wants, is fit and healthy, and can find a team willing to take him on a short-term deal, Drew Brees is more than capable of returning to the NFL.

However, his will and fitness are one thing, finding a team could turn out to be another.

The New Orleans Saints have moved on with Brees’ replacement at quarterback Jameis Winston and are building the team around him for the future.

Brees, if he does come back, won’t be around for five years to help build a project as a starting QB.

And he will also want to be the starting QB. A Super Bowl-winning MVP and one of the most accomplished QBs of modern times isn’t going to come out of retirement and warm the bench through cold winter nights in Green Bay or New England.

Brees also struggled with injuries – including his ribs and lungs – in his final season in 2020.

In the year he’d spent away from the NFL, the game would have gone further, gone faster than he remembers, and he would have been a target for opposing defenses — especially in the early weeks as teams find form and rhythm .

Inspiration from two competitors

While the 43-year-old Brees is extremely unlikely to return to the NFL, there are still two players in a similar position.

Tom Brady retired — and then did not retire — that same offseason to return with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and finish at number eight.

Aaron Rodgers stays with the Packers at Lambeau Field.

Brady will be 45 by the start of the 2022/23 season, Rodgers will be 38 and Brees will be 43.

Brady and Rodgers are still at the top of their game even as the next generation of Joe Burrow, Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes join the party.

But neither Brady nor Rodgers would have had a year off to play like Brees if he returned.

Drew Bree’s NFL game days are now firmly behind him. It is unlikely that he will return to the field.

If he returns to the sport, a coaching position or another broadcaster would be more appropriate after he and NBC end their contract.
