The Skyworth Clarus is the first outdoor television with Google TV

Google TV is a great operating system for streaming and finding the content you want. Whether it’s in the form of a Chromecast or installed natively on a TV, it’s one of our favorites. Now even outdoor TVs are seeing Google TV loaded on them, starting with the Skyworth Clarus.

Outdoor TVs fall squarely into the luxury TV category, right up there with a cliff-side pool overlooking the ocean. Of course, that doesn’t mean they’re that inaccessible, at least not anymore.

That Clarus of Skyworth is a mini LED TV with just over 1,400 nodes under the display. When it comes to TVs, mini-LED designs can sit level with OLED and offer some serious detail without costing as much. The Clarus has a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, which comes into play when viewing content directly in sunlight. With an outdoor TV, that’s never outside the realm of possibility.

Due to environmental changes, the Clarus also uses multiple sensors that adjust the brightness of the screen along with the color temperature. With this, the Google TV-powered device ensures that the content you see is correct even in harsh conditions. The Clarus also complies with Dolby Vision and HDR10 standards.

To complete the outdoor cinematic experience, the Clarus is equipped with an audio system with 8 speakers and a power of 100W. This is crucial as there aren’t many outdoor soundbars on the market. This means that the television is also Dolby Atmos-capable, so that an extensive surround sound experience cannot be ruled out.

Of course, for it to be an outdoor TV, it needs to be tested – lots of it. The Clarus is actually waterproof, dustproof, insect proof and shockproof. According to Skyworth, not much can penetrate the all-metal chassis of the Clarus with Google TV.

Pre-orders have yet to go live, and with it the price. We don’t expect the Clarus to be cheap – or even reasonable – in price, although a Google TV-powered exterior display is tempting. That Clarus will go live on January 1st, 2023.
