The SNP “abandons middle-class students with social engineering politics,” claims the MSP

Middle-class teenagers are said to have “no chance” of gaining a place on prestigious university courses because of the SNP’s social engineering policies.

Data from the University of Edinburgh has revealed that no Scottish student who has not been classified as ‘disadvantaged’ has gained a place on their law course this year.

Those from good schools or from less disadvantaged backgrounds were also not admitted to business, Japanese, and joint philosophy and psychology courses.

It prompted warnings from critics that policies aimed at forcing universities to expand access have actually closed the doors to swathes of average families.

Labor MSP Michael Marra, who revealed the figures, said: “Whatever your background, rich or poor, if you work hard and get the grades you should have access.”

Middle-class teenagers have “no chance” of winning places on prestigious university courses because of the SNP’s social engineering policies, it has been claimed (pictured: First Secretary Nicola Sturgeon).

Of the 1,200 Scots who applied to study law at the university, 659 were flagged as widening access compared with 555 unassigned applicants.

Around 170 students from socially disadvantaged backgrounds were then offered a place on the course, and no student without an extended entry category was admitted.

In addition to 19 from the rest of the UK, 72 foreign students were admitted to law school.

Ms Sturgeon, a Glasgow University Law graduate, attended Greenwood Academy, Dreghorn – a North Ayrshire State School – from 1982 to 1988.

Of the numbers, she said: “The data provides a really, really positive story for those applying from disadvantaged areas.

“In my earlier time as Prime Minister, I was regularly criticized for the fact that too few young people from socially disadvantaged communities went to universities.”

But industry experts aren’t convinced.

Professor Alan Smithers, director of the Center for Education and Employment Research at the University of Buckingham, said the policy “closes more doors” than it opens.

He said: “These startling numbers clearly show that policies aimed at increasing diversity can actually greatly reduce it by excluding the middle class.

“That can only weaken the universities and ultimately society itself. It would be wiser to ensure equal opportunity and allow universities to allow merit where diversity comes naturally.’

A spokesman for the University of Edinburgh said: “We take our commitment to expanding access very seriously and recognize that long-term and sustained efforts are needed to achieve meaningful social mobility in communities.

“More than 80 per cent of our Scottish entrants are regular government school students and the proportion of pupils from the most disadvantaged areas of Scotland has almost doubled since 2015.

“The number of students we can take from Scotland is limited by the Scottish Government, which means applicants only compete with those who are also in their own fee pool, ie Scotland, the rest of the UK and internationally.

“This means that the number of places available for international students has no impact on the number of places available for students from Scotland or the rest of the UK.”
